New Universal Remotes: Learn Your Control Codes

Posted by admin in Universal Remotes on 12 31st, 2009

One of the biggest drawbacks about old style universal remote controls was the fact that you had to input code after code into the device. This had to be done to allow it to recognize and function with all of your household electronics. Couple this with the fact that there were only a few different devices that could be plugged into your remote via remote control codes and you have a recipe for a disastrously unfriendly remote that was originally designed to simplify people’s lives. Luckily enough, however, remote control codes have begun to be abandoned in our high tech world, leaving people who purchase universal remote controls much happier and less angry customers.

Chances are that you are one of the millions of people in the United States who happens to own a massive variety of different electronic devices. While each of these electronic products is completely necessary for a fully functioning home entertainment system, each device comes with its own remote control. Once you have accumulated a bunch of these controls, you will certainly find that you are overwhelming your coffee table with all of these unnecessary objects which are only creating clutter. Even worse, you may find that from time to time you never really use all of the controls you have amassed or you will use them once during a television watching session and then never use it again for hours.

Luckily enough, thanks to advancements in universal remote control codes, the days of having all of these remotes lying around and taking up space are soon to be gone forever. While cheaper remotes still use universal remote control codes to program in the information for your television, DVD player and all of your other gadgets, newly designed electronic devices are actually able to communicate with your universal remote and program it to know automatically find the necessary operational remote control codes. Furthermore, new universal remotes are available with LCD touch screens so that you and your family can easily program the control to work on any electronic object in your home if you want.

Choosing Surround Sound Speakers

Posted by admin in Surround Sound on 12 31st, 2009

There are many possibilities when it comes to upgrading your entertainment system. Today I’m going to discuss a few of your options when it comes to different sound systems. The kind of sound system that you can get depends mainly on your budget and the size of your living room (or wherever your entertainment system will be located). Sure we would all love to have the biggest, loudest surround sound speakers out there, but sometimes that’s just not possible.

“Sound Bar” Speakers

This first option is for those with a tight budget or too small a room for surround speakers. It’s called a “sound bar”. A sound bar is a thin rectangular panel that you can place virtually anywhere in your living room. The most ideal location for this kind of speaker would be either right below or above your flat screen, which will require the least amount of wiring and it will fill your room with sound. The only drawback to this kind of speaker is that it can’t produce the low bass frequencies that larger speakers can produce. To solve that problem, you may have to purchase a sub woofer.

Component Surround Sound Systems

This is the way to go if you have a large room that you want to fill with sound. You can use these speakers for movie watching, music listening, and entertaining guests. A lot of newer model surround sound speakers even offer computer network capabilities so you can tap into it with your pc or laptop. These surround sound systems can often break the bank, but there are cheaper and used models out there that may still satisfy your needs.

These systems usually consist of 5-7 speakers. Usually there are 3 speakers up front and 2 in the rear of the room. The 3 in the front consist of 2 “front speakers”, and one channel speaker, which collectively produce the dialogue and special effects sounds in movies. The two in the rear are called surround speakers, which provide the background noise. Depending on how big your front speakers are, you may also want to consider a sub-woofer here too.

There are ways however, to have this great surround sound system even if your living room is small. There are in ceiling speakers and in wall speakers available out there as well. These speakers are usually a little more expensive than traditional speakers, and sometimes require professional installation, but it can be well worth it. In wall and in ceiling speakers can save you a lot of room so you can entertain more people, they also might add a little value to your home depending on the quality of the speakers.

Three speaker systems:

Three speaker systems are another great option if you are looking for a simple way to upgrade your sound system. These three-speaker systems are ideal for small rooms, and they can even be wall mounted for a sleek look. The three speakers consist of 2 small speakers and a sub woofer. The last component that comes with these systems is the control center, which usually consists of a CD/DVD player.

Well I hope explaining these different kinds of sound systems helped you in figuring out what is right for your home. Make sure you go with a good name that has a history in making quality speakers. Also, read up on reviews before you go out and purchase any huge and expensive surround sound speakers that might break on you the next day.

Plasma TV Care 101

Posted by admin in Plasma TV on 12 30th, 2009

Many thousands of people purchase their first plasma screen TV each year. They invest a significant amount of money to obtain a plasma screen which offers top of the line color accuracy, vibrancy, and clarity to enhance their family’s viewing experience. Once the television is delivered however, it’s important for plasma buyers to take the time to become familiar with the proper care of the screen to assure many years of trouble free viewing enjoyment. Plasma screens aren’t really “high maintenance” but observing a few tips offered here can extend the life of the screen.

• Provide a solid foundation: Be sure the plasma screen is placed (or mounted) in an area where it will not be “knocked around” or will accidentally fall.

• Let it breathe: Plasma screens generate a lot of heat which can speed the demise of the electrical components of the unit. Be sure the TV has enough open space around it. The manufacturer will provide venting guidelines.

• Stay dry: Exposure to excessive humidity, spills, or condensation due to rapid changes in temperature can destroy electrical components and cause corrosion.

• Tone it down: Rooms with lower ambient light require less brightness. Brightness levels that are set too high will prematurely age the phosphor lining of the plasma screen.

• Keep it cool: As alluded to above, plasma screens require a cool environment, due primarily to the heat they generate. Outdoor placement of a plasma screen is a no-no due to the exposure to heat, humidity, other moisture, and dirt.

• Use a little “elbow grease”- but not too much: Keep the screen clean with the proper tools. Manufacturers seldom recommend strong cleaners. Most often a micro fiber cloth is recommended which is effective in ridding the screen of dust and finger prints. When more aggressive cleaning is necessary cleaners specifically made for plasma or PC screens (anti-static cleaners) are used but should never be sprayed directly on the screen. The cleaner should be applied to the cloth. Use of paper towels, Kleenex, or any other abrasive type cloths should be avoided as they can damage the anti-glare coating.

• Don’t get burnt: Although anti-burn in technology has advanced greatly over the years, it is best to avoid leaving static images on the screen. This means that images should not be paused on the screen for extended periods of time and stations which present a static block/image on the screen should be viewed on a limited basis as well. Hooking your PC up to a plasma screen is also inadvisable as they are often used to display static images.

• Help your plasma TV weather the storm: This is just common sense; use a surge protector.

• Prevent pre-mature aging: The final word of caution; turn plasma screens off when not in use. This can help avoid accidental burn in, reduce heat, and help to avoid decreased brightness/pre-mature aging.

In Wall Surround Sound Speaker

Posted by admin in Surround Sound on 12 30th, 2009

In-wall surround sound speaker is one of the different types of in-wall speakers. In-wall speaker are an ideal solution for those who want to enjoy music by keeping their speakers hidden. In contrast to conventional speakers, an in-wall speaker offers many benefits such as cost effectiveness, compatibility, easy installation, and flexibility. Further, it does not occupy any floor space and can be placed across any flat surface including ceilings. It is most suitable in multi-room settings. Other names for in-wall speakers are in-ceiling speaker and recessed ceiling speakers.

A recent addition in the field of in-wall speakers, in-wall surround sound speaker systems form a perfect match for your home décor. The primary purpose of an in-wall surround sound speaker is to enhance home theater audio system, thereby providing non-intrusive enjoyment by keeping the speakers invisible. Its advantages, among many others, are high quality, outstanding performance, perfect sound, space saving, easy placement, sleek design, and versatility. In-wall surround sound speakers are most ideal in a home theater environment.

In-wall speakers with surround speaker system can be referred to as an audio system that involve the application of subwoofers, volume controls, cables, and two or more speakers including a rear speaker. Generally, surround sound speaker systems are available in two designs: monopole and bipole. Matrix sound and discrete sound are among the prime technologies employed for the performance of surround speaker system.

In-wall surround sound speaker system also has some disadvantages. Since it has static position, in-wall surround sound speaker systems sometimes lead to poor accuracy. Further, its installation cost is high. Another factor that affects the proper functioning of in-wall surround sound speakers is diffraction loss.

At present, a range of in-wall surround speakers coupled with advanced technologies are available according to the budget, need, and style of the customers.

LCD TV vs Plasma TV – The Choice is Yours

Posted by admin in LCD TV on 12 29th, 2009

Looks can be highly deceptive; you must have heard this adage often. And it holds so true in this case as well. Both, LCD and Plasma are flatter and thinner versions of your age old television. The outward appearance might be similar but the technology used in both is quite different.

First things first, plasma television does away with the bulky picture tube and electron beam scanning of traditional televisions. The technology it uses instead is based loosely on the fluorescent light bulb. Cells form the entire display and within each cell two glass panels are separated by a narrow gap in which is filled with neon-xenon gas and sealed in plasma form during the manufacturing process itself. The gas gets charged automatically at specific intervals, whenever the plasma is switched on. The charged gas then strikes red, green, and blue phosphors, which we call s pixels, and thus a television image is created. Screen-burn of static images and generation of heat after excessive use are certain drawbacks that plasma has not been able to improve upon.

Two layers of transparent material that are glued together form the LCD panels. Technologically, it differs from the plasma in many ways. Out of the two, one layer is coated with a special polymer that holds the individual liquid crystals. Current is then passed through these crystals allowing them to pass or block light. An image is thus created through a different technology in LCD screens. An external light source is needed in case such as this as the LCD crystals do not produce their own light. A fluorescent bulb is hence needed to view the image created by the LCD.

Since no phosphors get burned up in case of LCD screens, the heat generated is much less. Also, there is no direct emission of light from the screen itself. Keeping the budget and requirements in mind, one can now easily decide which one to go for-LCD or Plasma…what do ya say?!

Self-Efficacy Development And The Force

Posted by admin in Universal Remotes on 12 29th, 2009

Star Wars is probably the most recognized movie of all time. Even the opening billboard is distinctive; it is recognizable at once as a Star Wars movie in the first 5 seconds (it is up to six now for those who are living in the Dark Ages). One does not have to be a fan, or even interested, to know at least something about Star Wars, if only the name of the main character (Luke Skywalker).

One reason perhaps for its universal appeal is the concept of the Force. The main premise of the Force is that it is the energy that surrounds all living things which can be tapped to enable any sentient being to do anything it wants. The Force established control. All one has to do is to believe it can be done, and it does get done. Moreover, the potential to tap into the Force is not confined to one race, not even to one life form. It is the ultimate universal remote control.

Of course, the movie concentrates mostly on fabulous feats of physical strength and ability, telekinesis, paranormal manifestations and the occasional mental mind alteration because these are exciting things to watch. But take away all the light-saber flashiness, things flying across the room and the acrobatics, and all that is left is the Force. This is what self-efficacy embodies.

Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s ability to accomplish a task or an objective. It is a cognitive-based theory which is differentiated from confidence as a social construct rather than a state of mind. The predisposition is more pronounced in others, what can be referred to as having the Force strong within that person. It is a trait that needs to be developed, akin to Jedi training perhaps. In Star Wars, there is no specific training method espoused; just one-hand stands in a swamp and blindfolded swordplay which must have been fun to film during the late 1970s before computer-generated imaging. In any case, the Force becomes a force to be reckoned with when it is fully developed, and one does not have to be a Yoda, either.

A self-efficacious person is just as formidable because it is a task-oriented person with little fear of failure once the decision to act is made. Such decisions are not made arbitrarily or impulsively, however. A self-efficacious person will decide on a course of action in attaining a specific goal based on an analytical consideration of the factors that will lead to success. However, self-efficacy can work against a person and society when goals are not compatible with some moral construct. A person does not have to be inherently moral to develop self-efficacy. In an analogy to the Force, a Jedi will act when it is necessary and will not abuse the Force to harm others. This is the difference between a Sith, who is ruled by the Dark Side of the Force and a Jedi, who is ruled by the Force (which, apparently, is the Light Side).

The story of Star Wars is the struggle for survival of different peoples against an oppressive Empire. In People Wars, the struggle is against adversity in a competitive world which imposes boundaries limiting a person’s aspirations based on social or political constructs. Self-efficacy is not a mystic power that was merely created in the mind of a story-teller; it is the potential in everyone to achieve what seems to be impossible based on a belief that it can be done. Developing self-efficacy is like developing the Force; if it can be conceived, it can be achieved. May the Force be with you.

A Low Cost Home Theater Speaker Review

Posted by admin in Surround Sound on 12 28th, 2009

When it comes to home theater equipment it’s easy to spend lots of money very fast. Since the surround sound speaker systems needed for a true home theater experience are made up of 6 speakers including the subwoofer, they can be a substantial part of the cost all by themselves. However, price is not always the governing factor in whether a speaker system is high quality or not. In fact, sometimes the best surprises come in inexpensive packages. Here is a home theater speaker review on the Athena technologies Micra 6 home theater speaker system:

One of the biggest challenges to home theater equipment buyers is in the installation of the the products that they buy, and the speaker system can be the most problematic of all since there are more wires that run farther distances than any other component in the surround sound setup. Happily, Athena makes the installation as painless as possible by providing the speaker wires in the box already, and a very clear wiring diagram that should be able to be used successfully by even the most technically challenged among us.

If you wish to mount your speaker setup to the wall or hang them from the ceiling they have already thought of that too and included handy swivel mounting brackets for that kind of job.

The system itself consists of satellite speakers that are small and stylish enough to blend in with almost any surroundings and yet capable of great sound in an average size room. Of course, if your listening area is in a very large room you may have trouble filling it up with sound, but that is to be expected at this low price level.

The 8 inch subwoofer is adequate and blends well with the other speakers in the system without overpowering them. All in all, the sound is very impressive from a speaker system that is so inexpensive.

The best part of this whole system is it’s cost which is under $400 on some online sites. And considering how easy it is to spend thousands on a home theater surround sound speaker system, that figure is very easy on the pocketbook. So if you want to step up to a surround sound experience for your home theater system, but just can’t afford the big bucks right now, consider this home theater speaker review of the Athena Micra 6 and see if it doesn’t fir the bill.
